Sylvia Lim (Durham) offers belly dance technique classes at her home studio in Durham. She is a long-time student of movement, and has studied with many famous dancers and teachers in modern dance, ballet, ballroom, and Indian Kathak. Her belly dancing is distinctly flavored by the influence of these other dance forms. However, what draws her to belly dancing is its emphasis on being profoundly comfortable in one's own kinesphere. It is not a dance about soaring through space or leaping into the air; it is a dance about seeing the myriad of possibilities within one's body, in one's space ("If you thought that move was cool, wait until you see me layer a shimmy on top of that!) But whatever the movement, Sylvia is interested in clear technique, fluidity of line, and dynamic sense of balance. She imparts this knowledge to her students so that they, too, can access a sinuous and centered beauty within themselves. To read a recent article about Sylvia, click heres.
